 Vintage Aircraft: Classic Aero Restorations has restored a Hawker Hurricane Mk IIB circa 1940. The aircraft is part of the famous Hurricane series of single-seat fighter planes that were flown by the Royal Air Force during the historical Battle of Britain.
The Hawker Hurricane aircraft, which were flown by axis and allied powers alike during WWII, were popular because of rugged construction, simple maintenance, and long operational life. The Hurricanes series produced superior planes: fighter-bombers, interceptor fighters, and general ground-support aircraft. These airplanes have a top cruising speed of 325 mph and ceiling of 36,000 feet. That's pretty impressive when you consider the fuselage is covered with canvas and the cockpit is open.
The Hurricane design is by Sydney Camm, and the line began in 1937. The circa-1940 Hawker Hurricane Mk IIB has a serial number that is traceable. Classic Aero Restorations reports on its Web site that there are only seven flying Hurricanes known to be in circulation.
Classic Aero Restorations uncovers vintage fighter planes and fully restores these aviation relics to flying condition. The firm also is selling a Spitfire TR9 fighter aircraft circa 1944.
